One evening at Chabad House Dharamkot: a chair, a sheet of paper, and the name you've answered to since you were born.
It is the word we hear more than any other word, and almost none of us has ever stopped to ask what it says.
What happens that evening
Someone calls your name across the trail and you turn around before you've had time to think.
People come in after a day on the trails, find a chair and are handed a sheet of paper. At the top of the sheet you write one thing: your first name. From there the work begins — you take the name apart into its letters, look for the root, and see what comes up. In Kabbalah a name is not a label stuck on from the outside; it is a description, something said about you.
Rabbi Dror Shaul teaches the evening out of the wisdom of the soul he has been teaching here for years, with no vocabulary you have to decode first. No background needed, nothing to prepare, and you don't have to know anyone in the room; it is one evening, complete in itself. We work on the names of the people actually sitting there rather than examples from a book, and along the way you hear other people's names too — often that's the interesting part.
